What is the Safest Energy For the Future?

If the world is to avoid the worst impacts of a warming planet, the safest energy source is nuclear power. Despite the risks and uncertainties, it is an attractive solution from an energy security standpoint. It is clean, efficient and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Among other benefits, nuclear power can also stabilize power supplies. In 2050, nearly 4.5% of the global energy mix will come from nuclear power. That is up from 10% today.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) estimates, the capacity of nuclear power will increase from 392 GWe in 2019 to 475 GWe by 2030. China is set to add half of that capacity by 2030, followed by India. The United States will also see an increase.

The Associated Press surveyed 50 states to determine policies on nuclear and fossil fuels. It found that two-thirds of respondents believe that nuclear will help replace fossil fuels. However, it is important to note that some states do not support nuclear. For instance, Nevada is particularly sensitive to nuclear.

The Maryland Energy Administration supports nuclear. New York State also has a goal to reduce the use of fossil fuels by 2025.

As the world’s population grows, so does the demand for energy. With the increased awareness of climate change, many governments are putting a stop to the use of carbon dioxide-emitting fossil fuels. Some officials are now pursuing renewables, such as wind and solar. However, the electricity produced is not as clean as that from natural gas and oil.
