What is a 5 Star Green Building?

What is a 5 Star Green Building?

Green Star is an internationally recognized certification program that sets a standard for sustainable buildings. The rating system focuses on five main areas: materials, energy, water, transportation, and innovation. Besides these core categories, the system has four tiers. The final rating depends on the number of points earned.

The program works with building professionals and the public to build energy efficient, healthy, and innovative buildings. Austin Energy has pioneered the industry with the Austin Energy Green Building (AEGB) program. Since its inception, it has inspired other cities to follow. As a result, over 6,000 homes and businesses have been certified.

The program is based on an independent third party assessment. Its purpose is to encourage and reward sustainable practices. The program is also designed to create a mindset shift in the building design process.

In the past fiscal year, 726 houses were rated through the Green Building program. Of these, 86 houses received a five star rating.

The program provides tools and educational opportunities for designers, builders, and architects to make the right decisions in regards to construction, materials, and operations. Its certifications can be applied to all types of buildings, from housing to office spaces.

The program offers an online Portfolio Manager tool, which helps building owners track their energy usage and ensure that their buildings meet the minimum standards. The rating system has a Best Practice category, which rewards projects for their sustainable innovations. The Best Practice rating builds on the minimum expectations and shows that the building owner is making environmentally conscious choices.
