What is a 5 Star Green Building?

What is a 5 Star Green Building?

Green Star is an internationally recognised rating system which assesses the performance of a building’s design, construction and operations. It is designed to encourage the adoption of sustainable practices and help build owners contribute to a sustainable economy.

The Green Star rating is voluntary and offers independent verification of sustainability. As well as assessing the environmental impact of a building, the system promotes innovation in sustainable building practices.

A Green Star rating is based on an assessment of nine different environmental impact categories. These include energy, emissions, water, indoor air quality, materials and transportation. Each category is scored on a weighting scale and points are awarded accordingly. To reach a rating of a five star, a building must be net zero in 2023.

The rating system also provides several project certification options. “Design” and “As Built” certifications can be awarded to new buildings and major refurbishments. Before registering a project with the GBCA, the project team must agree on a certification option.

“Design” certifications are awarded to a new building during the planning phase. This allows property developers to market the building as a green building. In addition to demonstrating the project’s sustainability, it ensures the building has been built to the highest standards of sustainable design.

“As Built” certifications are awarded at the end of construction. They provide verification that the building has incorporated green building strategies into the design and construction process. Currently, there are three levels of certification.
