Upcycling Tea Bags into Oddly Shaped Coasters

I have recently discovered a fun and creative way to reuse tea bags – by turning them into uniquely shaped coasters! As an avid tea drinker, I accumulate a lot of used tea bags and I wanted to find a way to give them new life.

Gathering Materials

To begin upcycling tea bags into coasters, you first need to gather a few simple materials:

  • Used tea bags – make sure they are completely dried out first
  • Scissors – for cutting the tea bags into shapes
  • Mod Podge or glue – for adhering the tea bags to the coaster base
  • Coaster bases – these can be cork, felt, or even ceramic tiles
  • Sealant (optional) – like polyurethane, to seal and protect the finished coasters

I like to save up used tea bags over the course of a week or two before starting a new upcycling project. Black tea bags tend to work best as they provide nice contrast and hold their color well.

Cutting Tea Bags into Shapes

Once you have a collection of dried tea bags, the fun part begins – cutting them into unique shapes! Let your creativity run wild here.

Some easy shape ideas include:

  • Hearts
  • Stars
  • Circles or ovals
  • Triangles
  • Diamonds
  • Crescent moons

Overlaying multiple shapes and sizes can create really interesting designs. Don’t worry about getting the shapes perfect – the unique, homemade look is part of the charm!

Adhering Shapes to Coaster Bases

After cutting out all the tea bag shapes, it’s time to adhere them to the coaster bases. Apply a layer of Mod Podge or glue to the surface of the coaster base, then press the tea bag shapes onto the glue.

Overlap shapes and angles for a collage-like effect. Cover the surface fully or leave blanks spots to allow the coaster base to show through – either way works!

Once you’ve arranged the shapes, apply another layer of glue over the top to firmly adhere and seal the tea bag pieces in place. Allow adequate drying time before using the coasters.

Sealing and Protecting the Coasters

While sealing the coasters is optional, I highly recommend applying a protective sealant like polyurethane. This helps:

  • Protect the tea bag pieces from moisture damage
  • Prevent staining if drinks spill or condensation forms on the coasters
  • Strengthen and extend the life of your upcycled coasters

Apply 2-3 thin coats of sealant, allowing it to fully dry between coats. The sealant also adds a nice glossy sheen!

Displaying the Upcycled Tea Bag Coasters

Once complete, you have a set of environmentally-friendly, one-of-a-kind coasters! Here are some tips for putting them to use:

  • Arrange them in a fun mosaic pattern on your coffee table or desk
  • Give them as gifts paired with a set of teacups or mugs
  • Sell them at craft fairs and markets as unique gift items

The shape possibilities are endless, so have fun experimenting! Upcycling tea bags is an easy way to keep these “trash” items out of landfills and turn them into artistic treasures instead.
