Repurposing Leftover Wallpaper Samples into Quirky Coasters

As an avid DIYer, I’m always looking for fun and creative ways to repurpose materials around the house. Recently, I came across a genius idea for transforming leftover wallpaper samples into unique drink coasters. Here’s my guide to making your own quirky coasters using wallpaper remnants.

Gathering Materials

The great thing about this project is that it requires very few supplies – most of which you likely already have at home. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Wallpaper samples – The key component! Use any leftover wallpaper pieces, scraps, or samples you have around. The more variety, the better.

  • Scissors – For cutting the wallpaper samples down to size.

  • Craft glue – Any strong multi-purpose glue will do.

  • Foam brush – To spread the glue smoothly and evenly.

  • Cork backing – To give the coasters some thickness and absorbency. You can find cork sheets at most craft stores.

  • Mod Podge (optional) – For sealing and protecting the finished coasters.

Cutting the Wallpaper

I started by sorting through my various wallpaper samples and selecting patterns and colors I liked. I tried to pick ones that coordinated well together.

Next, I cut the wallpaper samples down into 4-inch squares – the standard size for a drink coaster. The cut edges don’t need to be perfect since the cork backing will cover them. Tip: Cut regular squares rather than circles to make this step easier.

I cut enough squares for 9 coasters, but you can make as many as you have wallpaper for.

Applying the Wallpaper

I arranged the wallpaper squares face-down on my work surface and lightly brushed the backs with craft glue. Note: Use just enough to adhere it, but not soak through.

Then I pressed a 4-inch cork square onto each glued wallpaper piece and smoothed it to make full contact.

At this point, I set a heavy book on top of the coasters to help them bond while the glue dried. I left them for about 30 minutes.

Finishing Touches

Once the glue was fully dry, I used a foam brush to apply a thin coat of Mod Podge over each coaster. This helps seal and protect the paper.

I did 2-3 layers, letting it dry in between.

Finally, I allowed the Mod Podge to cure for 24 hours. And just like that – my wallpaper sample coasters were ready to hold drinks in style!

Decorating Ideas

Beyond the eclectic pattern mixing, here are some other fun ways to customize these coasters:

  • Add dimensional embellishments like buttons, beads, or nailheads.

  • Personalize with metallic paint pens to write names/monograms.

  • Accent the edges with coordinated ribbon or washi tape.

  • Mix in a few solid cork pieces to offset the patterns.

  • Arrange them in a geometric design for visual impact.

The options are endless when you’re working with an array of lovely wallpaper swatches. Let your creativity run wild!

Benefits of Repurposing Wallpaper

Upcycling leftover wallpaper into coasters has many advantages:

  • It reduces waste by giving scraps new life instead of throwing them out.

  • It’s an extremely budget-friendly project using materials on hand.

  • The variety of patterns and textures make unique, one-of-a-kind coasters.

  • It’s a quick, easy craft – perfect for beginners or busy folks.

  • You can customize them in so many ways to suit your style.

So don’t let those wallpaper sample remnants go to waste! With a bit of effort, you can transform them into charming coasters full of handmade personality.

Tips for Success

Here are my top tips for flawless wallpaper coaster crafting:

  • Use sharp scissors or a craft knife for clean cuts.

  • Apply glue sparingly so it doesn’t warp the paper.

  • Smooth out all air bubbles between the wallpaper and cork.

  • Allow plenty of drying time between steps.

  • Finish with 2-3 coats of Mod Podge for a durable surface.

  • Mix and match wallpaper prints for lots of visual interest.

  • Consider square shapes for easier construction.

With the right supplies and techniques, these wallpaper coasters will turn out picture-perfect every time. So grab those leftover samples and start crafting your own stylish set today!
