How to Make Mudbricks

Making your own mudbricks is a straightforward process that can be done manually. Here are the key steps:

Choose Materials

  • Test local soils to determine suitability – a mix of roughly 20% clay and 70% sand is ideal. Too much clay shrinks and cracks while too little clay lacks cohesion.

  • Silt content of 10-30% will benefit workability and strength.

  • Add straw, grass or crushed bricks as reinforcement (up to 10% of volume).

Prepare the Mix

  • Break up clay lumps and remove rocks, roots or organic material.

  • Add water to hydrate the clay – around 10-15% moisture content is optimal.

  • Thoroughly mix clay, sand, silt and reinforcing fibers to achieve a moldable consistency.

Make the Bricks

  • Pour the mud mix into brick molds and compact tightly to remove air pockets.

  • Level off the top surface using a straight edge.

  • Carefully unmold and set aside to dry.

  • Drying time depends on weather but typically takes 1-2 weeks.

Curing

Constructing with Mudbricks

Mortar
