How to Upcycle Your Old Yoga Mats Into Eco-Friendly Welcome Mats
As an avid yogi, I love my yoga mat. It’s been with me through years of daily practice. But eventually, even the best yoga mat wears out. The grip fades, the material thins, and it’s time to retire it.
Rather than sending my trusty mat to the landfill, I wanted to find an eco-friendly way to give it new life. That’s when I discovered yoga mat upcycling – converting old yoga mats into useful products. Upcycling reduces waste while creating something functional and beautiful.
After researching techniques, I upcycled my worn-out mat into a durable and stylish welcome mat for my front door. Here’s how I did it, step-by-step:
Gather Your Materials
Upcycling a yoga mat requires just a few simple materials:
- Old yoga mat
- Fabric glue
- Decorative items (ribbon, fabric scraps, etc.)
I used Gorilla Glue Fabric Glue because it creates a super strong bond between fabrics. Any heavy-duty fabric glue will do the job.
Prepare the Mat
First, thoroughly clean your yoga mat with soap and water. This removes dirt, oils, and residue that could impede adhesion.
Once clean and dry, use the ruler and pencil to measure and mark the dimensions you want for your finished welcome mat. I cut mine to 2′ x 3′ – a standard door mat size.
Use sharp scissors to carefully cut along the lines. Remove any frayed edges for a clean look.
Style the Mat
Now comes the fun, creative part – styling your upcycled yoga mat!
Cut decorative fabric scraps or ribbons to desired lengths. Arrange and glue down your additions however you’d like. Get creative with patterns, textures, colors, and designs.
I glued rows of multi-colored fabric strips and a burlap border to personalize mine. The options are endless.
Add Non-Slip Backing
To prevent slides and slips, add a non-slip backing so your mat stays in place.
Cut a piece of grippy shelf liner or rug pad to fit your mat size. Apply a layer of fabric glue to the mat’s back edge. Firmly press the non-slip backing in place.
Once the glue dries, your yoga mat upcycled welcome mat is ready for the front door!
Tips for Successful Upcycling
Follow these tips for upcycling victory:
- Use a sharp pair of scissors to avoid ragged edges
- Check the glue’s bond time and let it fully cure before use
- Spot glue any edges that lift or detach after drying
- Shake the mat to remove any loose decorative pieces
- Add a polyurethane sealer over the design if desired
Get Creative with Yoga Mat Upcycling
Breathing new life into a worn-out yoga mat feels great. Beyond welcome mats, you can upcycle old yoga mats into:
- Placemats: Cut into shapes to decorate your dining table
- Tote bags: Use fabric glue to seal edges into a bag
- Coasters: Glue layers together for waterproof drink coasters
- Trivets: Protect tables from hot dishes with a padded mat
- Kitty beds: Cut into cozy lounging shapes for cats
With a little creativity, the possibilities are endless for yoga mat upcycling projects! I can’t wait to transform my next tired mat into something functional and beautiful.
