How to Repurpose Old Coffee Cans into DIY Toilet Paper Holders

Having extra toilet paper rolls around the house can be a real eyesore. Instead of tossing your empty coffee cans in the recycling bin, give them new life by turning them into handy toilet paper holders. This easy DIY project lets you recycle and repurpose items you already have at home.

Gather Your Materials

To make this simple toilet paper holder, you will need:

  • Empty coffee cans – Thoroughly clean and dry the cans before using them. Aim for cans approximately 6 inches high and 4 inches wide. The larger Cafe Bustelo cans work well.

  • Spray paint – Choose a color that will complement your bathroom decor. Matte finishes work best.

  • Adhesive velcro dots – These will be used to attach the toilet paper to the can. Make sure to get the kind with adhesive backing for easy application.

  • X-Acto knife – For safely cutting the velcro dots.

  • Drill with 1/4″ drill bit – For drilling holes in the bottom of the cans.

Prepare the Coffee Cans

Before painting and decorating, you need to prepare the cans:

  1. Thoroughly wash each coffee can with soap and warm water. Make sure to scrub both the interior and exterior.

  2. Allow the cans to fully dry. Wipe down with alcohol to remove any oils or residue.

  3. Use an X-Acto knife to carefully remove any labels still stuck to the cans. Try to keep the surface of the can intact.

  4. Lightly sand the tops and bottoms of the cans to rough up the surface. This helps the spray paint adhere better.

Spray Paint the Cans

Now it’s time to make the cans look pretty with a fresh coat of spray paint:

  • Take the empty cans outside for painting. Lay down some newspapers or a drop cloth first.

  • Hold the can 8 to 10 inches from the spray paint can. Apply several light, even coats of paint all around the can, allowing adequate drying time between coats.

  • Spray paint the interior of the cans as well for a polished look.

  • Let the cans fully dry for at least 24 hours before continuing the project. The paint may feel dry to the touch in less than an hour but needs more time to fully cure.

Add Finishing Touches

Once the painted cans are completely dried, add the finishing details:

  • Use a 1/4″ drill bit to make a drainage hole in the bottom of each can. This will allow any condensation buildup to drain out.

  • Cut rounds of adhesive velcro using the X-Acto knife. The velcro circles should be large enough to cover the interior bottom surface of the cans.

  • Firmly press the adhesive velcro to the bottoms of the cans. Avoid pushing down on the velcro’s “hook” side – you don’t want it to lose its stickiness!

Mount Your TP Holder

The coffee can toilet paper holder is ready for action!

  • Remove the adhesive backing from the other side of the velcro dots.

  • Firmly press the can against the wall near your toilet, making sure the velcro makes good contact.

You now have a handy toilet paper dispenser made from recycled materials! When your current TP roll runs out, simply place a new roll onto the velcro grip in the bottom of the can. The velcro holds the roll securely in place while allowing you to easily swap out rolls as needed.

This simple DIY project is an eco-friendly way to organize bathroom clutter while also keeping empty cans out of the trash. The sleek, uniform look adds style to any bathroom. Change up the color anytime for a fresh, new look!
