How to Make Homemade Toilet Paper from Old Newspapers

Making your own toilet paper from old newspapers is a great way to save money and reduce waste. With just a few simple supplies, you can easily turn recyclable paper into functional toilet paper right at home. Follow this step-by-step guide to learn how to make homemade toilet paper from used newspapers.

Gather Your Supplies

Making DIY toilet paper requires just a few key items:

  • Old newspapers – This is the main material that will be turned into toilet paper. Gather at least 5-10 old newspapers. Remove any shiny ad inserts or color pages.

  • A blender – A standard kitchen blender works perfectly for this project. You’ll use it to blend the newspaper and water into pulp.

  • A large plastic tub or bucket – This container will be used to hold the pulp and make forming the toilet paper easier. Look for one at least 5 gallons in size.

  • Window screen – Fiberglass window screening is ideal. This will be used as a mold to form the toilet paper sheets. Get a piece at least 15 x 15 inches.

  • Sponge – You’ll use a large natural sponge to absorb excess water from the pulp. Make sure it is 100% natural and doesn’t contain any synthetic materials.

  • Towels – Have some clean towels on hand to dry the homemade toilet paper after forming. Paper towels or cloth towels will both work.

Make the Toilet Paper Pulp

With your supplies gathered, it’s time to make the toilet paper pulp:

  1. Tear the old newspaper sheets into small strips.

  2. Place the torn newspaper strips into the blender. Fill the blender about 2/3 full with the newspaper strips.

  3. Add warm water until the blender is about 3/4 full. About 4-6 cups of water is needed, but this depends on how much newspaper you use.

  4. Put the lid on the blender tightly. Blend on high speed for 1-2 minutes, or until the newspaper and water blend into a pulp consistency.

  5. Pour the blended pulp into the large tub or bucket.

The pulp should be the consistency of a thick smoothie. Add a bit more newspaper or water to adjust as needed. The pulp is now ready to be formed into toilet paper sheets.

Form the Toilet Paper Sheets

With the pulp made, you can now form it into usable toilet paper sheets:

  1. Place the window screen mold into the pulp tub, with the screen side facing up.

  2. Use your hands to mix and distribute the pulp evenly in the tub. Make sure the pulp coats the screen mold evenly.

  3. Slowly lift the screen up vertically from the tub. Hold it level and let the excess pulp drip back into the tub for 10-15 seconds.

  4. Place a towel on a flat surface and carefully lay the screen mold down on it. The pulp should remain on the screen in a thin, even layer.

  5. Lightly press a 100% natural sponge down on the pulp layer to soak up excess water. Apply gently to avoid squeezing the pulp through the screen.

  6. Carefully peel the new toilet paper sheet off the screen. Place it on a dry towel and repeat steps 3-6 until all the pulp is used.

  7. Lay the formed toilet paper sheets out flat to air dry completely for 12-24 hours. Once dry, they are ready to use!

Use Your Homemade Toilet Paper

Your homemade recycled toilet paper is now ready to use in the bathroom:

  • Cut or tear the dried sheets into squares that will fit onto a toilet paper roll.

  • Roll up the squares tightly and place them onto an empty toilet paper tube.

  • Store extra sheets in a cool, dry place until needed.

  • Be sure to only flush 1-2 sheets at a time, as the homemade toilet paper is less strong when wet than commercial varieties.

  • Make adjustments to the thickness and strength of your toilet paper by adjusting the pulp concentration and drying time.

With a bit of trial and error, you can reuse old newspapers to create functional, eco-friendly toilet paper at home for just pennies on the dollar! Making your own toilet paper is a very rewarding DIY project.
