Biological and Physical Aspects of Environmental Problems

Environmental problems are caused by the conflicts between the interests of people on one side and the natural resources on the other. These conflicts can be caused by human activities, natural events, or by conflicting systems of values.

In addressing these challenges, researchers need to address the biological and physical aspects of the problems. This includes information on the abundances of many interdependent species, the structure of the ecosystems, and the propagation of variability across scales. It also requires well-controlled multifactor experiments that are replicated throughout a region or nation.

Environmental problems are often based on overexploitation of natural resources. Overexploitation can cause excessive emissions, eutrophication, loss of biodiversity, and damage to the environment. Some of these effects can affect people and places outside the borders of a country.

The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction defines environmental degradation as “the loss or reduction of capacity to absorb environmental hazards due to the degradation of the environment.”

Biological studies are conducted at appropriate spatial and temporal scales. Long-term observations of key ecological processes can provide signals that help identify trends. Also, well-controlled multifactor experiments are necessary to understand cause-effect relations.

An increased awareness of how ecological systems work and the importance of biodiversity can promote greater public involvement in ecology. Involvement would help citizens become more informed and support effective environmental policies.

Climate change is a major concern. Half of the people surveyed by the Pew Research Center report that climate change is a serious problem. The survey shows a significant increase in the number of people concerned about this problem.
