Anybody who has ever had to relocate – move from one house to another home, or from one office to another – will tell you that there is a lot more to it than simply packing things in boxes, transporting them and installing them at the new location. If it were only so simple, the whole adventure wouldn’t be so stressful.

It’s true, it can be a stressful experience. On the other hand, it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it can be a very exciting period in your life if you handle it correctly. Need to move or relocate soon? What’s the best way to go about it to make sure it all goes according to plan? Here are the top eight tips you need to remember to properly pack for your move.

Be systematic

It’s all in the planning – the planning can’t be stressed enough. Here are the various steps to consider:

  • Plan ahead, start early – Take a look around your home and see how much you have – you probably have more than you realise. Start packing early, as an experienced Cheltenham removals firm like Advanced Removals & Storage recommend. If there are things you don’t often use, pack them already, even if the move is still a month away.

  • Systematically packing – Go from room to room. It’s a good idea to start with the loft or attic, then work your way down. Colour-code and label as you go.

  • Identification – Use labels to identify what’s in the box. Using colours is a great way to identify what’s in the box, as well as where it should go in the new house, and whether they are sensitive (breakable) items or not.

  • Use clean paper – old newspapers (commonly used) may rub their ink on your items. Use clean paper for wrapping.

  • Quality boxes – it may cost you some money, but you want quality boxes that are sturdy enough.

  • Packing smart – Place the heaviest items on the bottom and don’t put too many items in one particular box.

  • Unpacking safely – keep the item above the box whilst unwrapping in case it falls.

  • Transport some things yourself – especially expensive or personal items.

Here is one more hint – an invaluable one – when it comes to the actual move itself. Don’t expect to be able to unpack all the items at the day itself. It’s very convenient to have an overnight bag packed and ready to be deployed for the first two nights. Bring sleeping bags, pillows, drinking water, snacks, utensils, tissue paper, and so on. Pretend you have to go camping for a night or two. Maybe you won’t have to, but at least you’ll be prepared for it. It’s all part of the adventure, after all.
