Orchards And Do You Respect Your Elders?

Oh we love going to the local orchards this time of year. Not only are there gorgeous pumpkins but delicious apples as well.

I just never get tired of seeing all of the beautiful Fall pumpkins.                                 This orchard even has lots of cute wagons for you to put your pumpkins in.                                  Oh and then there are the Fall apples!!                                So many wonderful varieties to choose from.                                   I love putting up apples so that I can make apple pies, apple butter, apple jelly and apple sauce during the Winter months. I don’t care for the candy apples but boy do I love a good caramel apple and add some nuts like these have and it makes it even better!! Do you like going to local  orchards and getting apples?

I have been noticing lately when I am out how some people are treating older people. You know it is really sad how people don’t respect and learn from them. As long as my parents and grandparents were here I never stopped learning from them. When I married my husband many years ago I was so impressed with my mother-in-law. She is the best cook I have ever known and she has always been so good to share all of her recipes and knowledge with me. So many times I will cook something and get a lot of compliments and it will be a dish I learned how to make from her. Her decorating skills have always been awesome and her gardening skills I would put up against almost anyone.People are amazed that I know the botanical names of so many plants, again this is something that I learned from her! A while back I picked up the phone to call her and ask a question about something that I was wanting to can out of the garden and she had the answer right off. I remember thinking here she is 82 years old and how cool is this that I call her and find out these things first hand. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times over the years I have called her to ask her advice or knowledge about something.Long before the internet she was like having our own Google!!  We have always liked hearing stories about how they used to do things when she was younger. She told me this past year that most people really didn’t want to hear things like that. I told her that what I was seeing was that more and more people are wanting to do things like was done years before. She had even told me that she knew there were people in the family that didn’t want to hear the stories. She also told me that since she had gotten older that when she was out that  she had noticed how differently older people are treated.  I even had someone tell me recently about their mother-in-law that had to go to a living place  that she could tell her stories to some people who hadn’t heard them. I was really really surprised that he had said this. We can all be a giving in different ways. It can be a smile or a kind word or listening to someone tell a story we have already heard. You know older people like our parents and grandparents have such a vast wealth of knowledge and experiences that they can share with us if we just take the time to listen. Just remember the world says what goes around comes around but the Lord says you reap what you sow. because you know what? We are all going to be the older parents and grandparents as time goes on. Do you learn from your parents, grandparents and elders and treat them with respect?

All of the health food stores that carry our products have told us what awesome testimonies they have been getting on our Eczema Relief bar and balm. We have also added three new products this month so check them all out at  Eco Natural                                We have also added some new colors to our mineral makeup line!

I was just thinking that we don’t live in a multi generational world anymore and I miss those stories from another time

I love going to orchards in the fall. The ones we have around here often have a pot of hot cider ready for visitors … cider which was just pressed from the farm’s apple harvest. In fact, the farmer’s market and many local businesses have hot cider available to visitors … it’s such a nice tradition.

My MIL suffers from dementia. She can’t remember what happened yesterday or today but she clearly remembers her distant past. She tells the same stories over and over again. Yes, there are times that hearing the same thing again and again is tiring but … she doesn’t know that she’s repeating and the stories are important to her. Every once in awhile, the same story includes an additional detail … something fascinating … something which tells me a little more about her. And if I didn’t listen to the story, for the 50th time, I’d miss that little gem. We all want to be heard. Listening and paying attention to others is a wonderful gift we can give … doesn’t cost anything more than our time. With our elderly, it’s particularly important … both for them and for ourselves. They are our history keepers … the ones who lived it and can tell us the truth. We put ourselves at a disadvantage if don’t listen and take advantage of their wonderful store of knowledge. All we have to do is listen … it’s such a small thing! :-)

I used to go to the apple orchard every year in the fall. Now I don’t so much with just the two of us. I do miss it.

You my dear are a good hearted person. I always respected my parents and anyone else when I’m out.
This time of year there is so much beauty and I agree with you Alicia I just never get tired of seeing pumpkins.
Unfortunately there is very few apples to choose from here this year, the farmers had a warm spell then a frost and lost 90% of their crops. It is a little strange not to be picking apples this year.
    Have a great week,
    Hugs Rosemary…xoxo

I loved and respected my grandparents too. I adored their stories, just as I adore my own mom’s stories. You are so right that there is a lack of respect for older people now though. :(

I think there is a lack of respect in general these days, not just regarding the older folks :(
Looks like a fun time at the orchard! I love going to get not only the candy and caramel apples but the cider and donuts, too!

You know, you’ve given me a brilliant idea. Maybe I should write these stories down….

I hear ya on that. We’re all going to be elderly one day, so you’d think people would have more compassion for seniors. I tell ya, I fume every time I drive past this assisted living facility in my area, where the posted speed limit is 25 for half a block. It’s like I’m the only person going near that speed limit; everyone else is just blowing by at 40-plus mph. It’s a sad sign of the times.

I always enjoyed hearing the stories from the older generation. I miss them!

Last month I used my cell phone to record an interview with a fellow volunteer (at a local thrift store) who as a child had been an extra in “The Wizard Of Oz”. She told such great stories! I wanted to upload it to youtube so that everyone could know, and her knowledge would enter the general fund, but she’s shy so I may have to wait until she passes on. Still, the process is easy, so start recording The Elders and get their wisdom and humor recorded please!

Love today’s thought-provoking post. First up yes I LOVE going to local orchards. I live in apple country where sadly we export most of ours and buy in the tasteless varieties, but you can still find old heritage orchards nearby for some treats.

Regarding elders; sadly I have little respect for my parents, but I loved my grandmother dearly and still miss her. SHe had such a ‘common sense’ approach to life that I respect and loved me unconditionally, yet demanded behavioural boundaries and knew how to put them in place firmly but with love.

I have elderly neighbours who I love to hang out with – one is a ‘gentleman of the land’ – he teaches me about gardening and making do and mend. The other is a lady; she died a few months back, but I spent many a happy hour listening to stories of her childhood and we’d swap baking ideas. My neighbour is in her eighties and lives alone; we make time for a natter across the fence every single morning :)

We love going to local orchards this time of year, too. In fact, we just went apple picking last weekend and now I have a bushel to use! Respect is something that seems to be out of fashion no matter what age…. sadly….

  • Jordan@the2seasons

We just went to an apple orchard this weekend and picked tons of apples to do the same thing. Make some pies, applesauce, apple butter etc. I have already made some carmel apples and they hit the spot. I am very lucky to have both of my grandmothers around and I have called them many times this summer in regards to gardening and some sewing projects. I am so thankful for all the knowledge they help give me.

I LOVE local pumpkin and apple orchards. They are truly the epitome of fall to me!! :)

I got to be the ‘elder’ this past week and it was so nice to spend time with my grown sons and grandkids. We all need to be aware of how we respect our elders and give them the honor they deserve. You’ve written an excellent post and made several good points! I’m off to look at your mineral makeup! I still love mine! Hugs!

  • Lavender Dreams

I really love the sample packs you’ve added! What a great way to try some different colors of the mineral make up to see which color is best!

I am drooling over those candied apples. YuM! My mom picked some up for me the other day, but when we ate them the apples were mushy! So disappointing!! ;)

It’s so important to be respectful to our elders. I love hearing stories and advice from our older generations.

  • Lisa @ Two Bears Farm

I should try your eczema products. Cort really struggles, especially in the winter.
I love that big row of pumpkins! The twins will be headed to one of those farms on a field trip with their preschool in a couple of weeks and I can’t wait!

Sad that we are at the totally opposite side of the world… Strange that you are harvesting pumpkin and apple while we are having flowers blooming at here… Nevertheless, I can feel the joy of autumn through your post :D

  • Rebecca

    Alicia,
when the kids were small we always went to the local farm and pick our own pumpkins. The kids loved picking our their own pumpkin to put on the porch. It was always so much fun! It sounds like you had a wonderful mother-in-law and a lot of wonderful memories.

I started seeing pumpkins at the grocery today – so fun to see everyone wheeling away with them! So glad your products are getting great feedback, I know I love mine!

You are so right about the wisdom and general practical knowledge of our parents and grandparents. Wish I knew half as much!

  • Jayda

Those pumpkins and apples look SOOO good!!! And I totally agree about parents and grandparents…they do have so much practical knowledge. My Grandma can tell me the conversion for any measurement, which is super helpful because we’re Canadian, and most recipes have American measurements haha.
