Bad Geese

There is a park in Hendersonville which is right on the lake and has so many great ducks and geese that live there. We used to take our children there often when they were younger and it is so nice that our grandchildren will be able to enjoy it as well. The ducks and geese love for you to bring them food to eat. A real popular treat is bread crumbs. So we always take a loaf of bread with us when we go.

As you can see our grandson Will is really happy to be there but is just a little overwhelmed that they are coming after the bread crumbs so fast. Get a good look at that goose right behind him with his head turned sideways,

Will is starting to feel more comfortable. Now check out that same goose behind him. He is starting to crane his neck over to see what we have.

So Will is just so happy feeding them when all of a sudden that big white goose came around and bit him on the foot trying to get to the food. He really became aggressive and really startled him. I tried to make him go away and he bit me too!! I swung the bread bag at him hoping that would work but he just started making all of these loud noises and flapping his wings. I wasn’t able to get pictures of this because I was having to fight that goose off of me!!

As you can see in this picture there is a cute bridge that goes across the lake. So we decided to walk across it because the ducks and geese didn’t seem to want to be on the bridge.                                  So Will is having a good time feeding them from the bridge until our daughter-law said ” look here they come”                                So Will looks up and starts to get really concerned.                                They followed us to the other side which was fine except for that big white goose, not only did he come across the bridge but he brought three more just like him with him!! We only saw four of them but they all were loud and aggressive. Needless to say Will was ready to leave. I don’t blame him! We have been feeding the ducks and geese at this park for over 25 years and we have never seen any geese that look like those. As you can tell from the pictures they are taller and have a beak that goes up farther on their head. Does anybody know what kind of geese these are or are they ducks?

You, my dear, now have wild geese mixed in with your ducks. The large white one with the bill that goes up higher is definitely a wild goose which would account for the aggressive behavior. Geese are very aggressive especially when there is food involved. (as my husband said they are just aggressive, grumpy….)

I agree with Peggy, that looks like a goose! And geese are jerks. I say this because I had the exact same experience as your grandson when I was a child, except it bit my hand. :-P

We get the geese with the ducks as well and my son years ago had the same reaction as your grandson. He didn’t like feeding the ducks, needless to say :) Your grandson is adorable!

How cute! I love ducks and geese, especially in the spring when they’re with their babies! Will is a brave little guy – I imagine they can be a little intimidating when they’re not much smaller than you. :)

Darn ducks! The picture with the duck behind him looks like they posed identically. I don’t blame your grandson or being skeptical.

Oh yes my friend; around here in rural England we keep geese rather than dogs to guard our properties :)

Can’t help you out with the duck identification :) But sure hope you guys have a more pleasant experience next time. Have a great week!

We live on a small lake and I had to put a fence out to keep the geese away. They will chase you and not stop until they catch you. I get a broom and go right back at them.

Cute story and pictures. Last time we tried feeding the ducks, my boys freaked out and could not believe the way we were rushed! Of course, the geese that attacked were not fun at ALL. ha ha

  • Jordan@the2seasons

Oh my who would of thought the ducks would be so aggressive. Hope everyone is ok and not traumatized.

I’m pretty sure the ones you are referring to would be white geese. They are usually in charge of the rest of the flock; and fend for themselves against wild animals (unlike other poultry). :)

Love all your photos–brings back a lot of memories of feeding the geese when I was little. I remember being terrified of them though because they would bite your fingers to get the bread. (I don’t think they really bite, just snap their beaks down hard).

As a kid, my brothers and I used to do the same thing at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. There’s a little pond there filled with geese and ducks, and we’d always bring crackers and bread to feed them.

I just can’t believe how persistent and aggressive those dumb things were! They sure put a damper on the experience.

Okay…I am not lying: I have got a bit of a fear of those things pecking me. I like to steer clear of them when we visit the park. HA. :) Your little grandkids are so cute!! :D

LOL! i am laughing because I had a similar situation with my oldest son when he was 2! We ended up running with me carrying him and a large goose chasing after me!

Wow, I thought there were a lot of ducks and geese where I just went. That looks overwhelming, even to me! Poor Will.

    LOVE the photos!

I was never afraid of geese until I lived in Boston where they would walk along the river and try to bite EVERYONE! They really are aggressive!

We had a park like that in Australia where we used to live and because the geese were so annoying they stopped people from feeding the ducks. Everyone except the geese were really upset. Will is a cutie!

I have such a hard time leaving a comment-here goes one more time.

Whoa, that’s one bold goose. Don’t those geese know they shouldn’t bite the hand that feed them? Tsk, tsk! I hope you won the battle between woman and bird. ;)
