Tomato Time And Do You Watch What You Say?

One of the retail stores that carry our products is Hendersonville Produce. I was there the other day and saw this sign. It really is tomato time here in Tennessee. I have been putting up tomatoes for us to have this Winter.

There are so many kinds of tomatoes to choose from. I love all of the pretty colors of these tomatoes. They look so nice when you add them to a recipe.

Our tomatoes are looking really good and producing a lot but I have still been buying extra at the Farmers Market to make sure that we can have plenty in the freezer.

I love this sigh that is on display at Hendersonville Produce. It is so very true!! We need to make sure that we support our local farms and farmers!!

Do you like to put up tomatoes to have in the Winter?

On another note I was thinking about my mother-in-law today. A few months ago she was in a place that she truly didn’t want to be. We wanted her to come and stay with us but she just really wanted to be at her home. She was telling me one day that someone she knew had come  in the room and asked her if all she did was sleep. She was so upset about this. She was telling me that even though it really upset her she was more hurt than anything else. She had been in bed quite a bit because she really hadn’t felt well at all. This got me thinking though about how important our words are. We all should be aware of what we say and how it might affect others. The Bible says that our words are so important. I found that there are over 120 verses in the Bible that talk about the importance of our words. If you would like to check them out go here.  Power of Words   I really like one of the ones from Proverbs that says that gracious words are like honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. I have been making such an effort to think before I speak and to be aware of what words I say. Do you watch what words you say?

    Hi Alicia,
We are still waiting for vine ripe tomatoes in our garden, here in Seattle. Some years it takes longer.

And yes, I try to watch what I say, but thanks for the reminder!

  • debora rorvig

My yellow cherry tomatoes are just ripening. I’ve got two bowls full! Mmmm. And yes, words are very important to me. The Bible says we’ll be justified or condemned by our own words. Better to say nothing sometimes!

  • Joanne @ Eats Well With Others

Yay for tomato season! I’ve been stocking up as well. :)

Sometimes I think people just don’t think about the import of the things they say, but it can be really hurtful even if unintentionally so!

No home-grown tomatoes for me this year, but I’ve been stocking up from the market, they have nice ones this year. I’ll be planting next year, I miss them right outside the door.

  • Jennifer @ casacauspanic.com

Hi Alicia! Beautiful tomatoes! My husband loves them and I know they are so good for you. I love a good ranchero sauce but I’ve never tried it w/fresh tomatoes.
It is very easy for me to watch my words with others, but sometimes I am not so good about it with my close family. It is definitely something that could use a little work on my part.

  • Lavender Dreams

I was always so careful with my words and didn’t even use slang for many years…but I’ve gotten into some bad habits lately. This is a good reminder to think before I speak. I’m not going to enter the giveaway because I have so many our your products that I enjoy! I LOVE the mineral make up! It’s so light and silky on my face! Sweet hugs!

do you deliver?! those tomatoes look so good and would be perfect for my homemade salsa. i must make it a point to get to a farmer’s market.

  • Jordan@the2seasons

How do you freeze tomatoes? I am curious.

  • Carolyn Jung

Heirloom tomatoes are one of the things I look forward to most in summer. I’ve picked quite a few in my backyard. And FINALLY, my cherry tomatoes are starting to ripen. They took forever this year, for some odd reason.

  • Cafe Fashionista

Hooray for tomatoes! These look positively divine!! :)

  • jenny

thanks for visiting! We love our Jersey tomatoes, but I really don’t know how to save them for winter. I enjoyed reading your blog.

  • http://andhudsonmakesthree.blogspot.com Ashley {Hudson’s Happenings}

Oh boy, do I love tomatoes!! My family has a farm about an hour away from where we live and my Dad always plants some tomatoes in the garden. We enjoy them so much when he brings home a big bag! We’ve never put any up for winter…but probably should. Now I’m hungry for tomatoes. :D

p.s. loved your story about the power of words. SO very true. I am probably guilty of misusing words, and unconsciously hurting others, but I really try to think before speaking. I am so sad that happened to your MIL. :( Hope she is doing better now.

These tomatoes look fantastic… sad that they can be kept until winter.

Still obsessed….is organic powder good for acne and oily skin?

    • http://ecofriendlyhomemaking.com Alicia

Yes this makeup works great for acne and oily skin. It only has two ingredients in it and they both are good for your skin.
      Thanks
      Alicia

I don’t get to put up that many tomatoes. I really need to do better about storing for the winter. I’ve been dealing a lot with peoples words.

  • http://cherylbarker.blogspot.com/ Cheryl Barker

I try to be careful of what I say but also make plenty of mistakes. Can always use the reminder!

  • Keeping it Cozy

It’s always so nice to buy local! We’re lucky to have so many farmers markets here in the south. :-) I do like to put up tomatoes but I have to admit I’m a little exhausted from it… we were lucky to have an abundant supply of tomatoes this summer, but it did make for a lot of work!

Oh your poor Mum, words sting and we always hear the negative louder than the positive in our lives….

  • Mary Younkin

Those tomatoes are just lovely. I would love to have a pantry stuffed with summer tomatoes!

  • Rosemary H

I am so into tomatoes this time of year I may end up looking like one. I can never get enough. I even would pick yours. :)))
I’ve tried emailing you and it will not go through when you get a chance drop me a line sweetie.
    Have a great weekend,
    Hugs Rosemary…xoxo

  • Kellie Collis

Looks delish! Have a wonderful weekend, Kellie xx

  • shelia

HI Alicia! Oh, yes, ma’am! I love me some tomatoes and we’re going to plant some this fall and hopefully have tomatoes through the winter months. They do grow here just hoping my brown thumb won’t be a hindrance! ;)
Sorry to hear that about your MIL. It’s so right, my mother lives in a retirement home and I know the folks are old there but some of them say the most hateful things. It hurts my mother too! As I get older I do try to think before I speak.
Thanks so much for popping in to see me.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

Thank you for the link to the Power of Words. After not hearing the honeycomb proverb for my whole life, this is the second time in the past couple weeks I have come across a reference to it making me stop in my tracks and take heed.

  • Ricki Treleaven

I agree about words….Shelley just read a summer reading book that basically attributed Hitler’s power to his command over language. I do not put up tomatoes….I have never canned or pickled anything in my life, although I would love to learn how! Farmer’s markets are the best.

  • My Little Home and Garden

My tomato “crop” is small, just a few plants in the garden. I have wondered about trying to make chili sauce or some such thing with tomatoes from a farmers’ market. My mom used to make it and it was tasty!

  • Cottage and Broome

I love going to the farmers market, have been buying lots of tomatoes and apples are now starting to come in up here! Thanks for stopping by, Laura

  • Terry

So, so true. No Farms ~ No Food. I have been making the best tomato soup from some of our tomatoes. I was just in Tennessee last week. We were in Memphis.

I believe words are very powerful! So yes, I’m very careful with mine. In my opinion, if I can’t say something which is helpful or kind, I’m better off just staying quiet. It’s also about compassion and empathy … putting one’s self in the others position and asking if we’d like to hear those words. Sometimes people say hurtful things in jest … that really bothers me. So when I’m thinking about being “cute” or funny, I ask myself if what I’m saying, in another context, would be funny & cute or just hurtful. If it’s just hurtful, then it’s not appropriate as a joke.

I’m getting ready to preserve herbs … I’m going to try freezing them this year. I’ve never canned before and, in truth, I’m a little afraid of it but … I’d really love to spend the winter eating “fresh” tomatoes so … I might just have to get over the fear and jump right in. :-) Thanks for the encouragement!

  • Amy (Savory Moments)

Look at all those tomatoes! I just made (and posted) a batch of tomato jam from a large basket of tomatoes my in-laws gave us. More where those came from, too! Lots this year.

    Happy Wednesday!

  • red.neck Chic

I have become insanely obsessed with “Cherokee” tomatoes. Like… I could eat them CONSTANTLY!!! The ONLY problem I have with them is this: I can’t find them in my ‘hood. You all have them in Tennessee at the Farmer’s Markets! Soooooo not fair!!!

I remember when I was little (and please forgive me for admitting this – but this is one of the few Bible versus that EVER stuck with me) reading: “Life and Death are in the Power of the Tongue”. Since I was about 8 (and not really sure what that verse meant!) those words have stayed with me… they have been words for me to live by.

Have a BEAUTIFUL Thursday full of fun and gentle words…
    Robelyn

  • Emily

Our tomato crop was aweful. Thank you drought and chickens! Thank God there’s always next year! And yes words are extremely powerful, and should be used with upmost care, always!

  • thoroughly modern me

So true! It is hard to think before you speak!! I must continue to work on that. I’m glad you liked my post about the simple summer checkerboard on our picnic table. I was just thinking summer had come to an end but your tomatoes have me wishing for a few more weeks of fresh produce. Thanks for sharing.

  • Amber

I love tomatoes, thanks for sharing!

  • krkt

i wave my no farm stickers proudly as well, heck anything tastes better, thats gets from ground to my mouth faster than any grocier

  • Beth

Hi Alicia, Thanks for coming to visit me. I enjoyed reading about the tomatoes – I still have some frozen from last year, so I’m not freezing any this year. I have had lots of tomatoes this year and have sold some, and given many away (and eaten alot too). I’ve enjoyed them, and so have others. We may get a freeze tonight – I hope not – and if we do, that’ll be the end of the tomatoes. I’m hoping for a few more weeks production yet but time will tell. Thanks for the reminder regarding our words. So true.
