I Am Making Wine Vinegar

I have had quite a few people contact me about the picture that I am using in my header. It is one that I took at Lake Tahoe.

                                  Lake Tahoe is so beautiful!

Here is another view of the lake that I took the same day. It is so awesome that  you can be swimming in the lake and looking at snow on the mountains at the same time! Thanks to everyone who had said that they really liked the picture. Now on to the vinegar making!

My good blogging friend Lannae from  Lannae’s Food and Travel  was so kind and blessed me with some starter so that I could make us some homemade red wine vinegar. Lannae lives here in Nashville and was so sweet to make a special trip to the Strawberry Festival at the Produce Place to bring me some awesome starter that is 27 years old! How thoughtful is that? Not only did she bring me the starter but has helped me so much in knowing how to make it. I have made herb vinegars for years but never any wine vinegar. You use the starter with about a half a bottle of red wine and a cup of water.Wrap the jar in a dark cloth and tie it at the top Then place it in a warm dark place for about a month. After the month if it is vinegary enough put some in a jar in the fridge to use to cook with, Add more red wine and a little water to continue your original mother. I am really excited about this. Thanks so much Lannae!!

Have you ever made your own wine vinegar? If so did you think it turned out better than what you buy at the store?

I would love to make my own vinegar. I have no idea where to get vinegar starter from. I’ll have to chase up my old friend Mr. Google and see if he knows of any. :)

Oh, I think my mom would love this – she loves the taste of vinegar on salads! :)

Good luck and have fun with your vinegar! Keep the jar lid off, but tied up in the cloth to get air in the jar and to keep fruit flies out. After about a month, taste the vinegar to see how it is. Then you can give away a portion of your crock to give others who want vinegar starter. The vinegar starter came from Northampton MA. Now, once per week, 2 or 3, I add a cup +/- of wine and a squirt of water to my crock to keep feeding the vinegar. Vinegar is so much fun! The flavor of mine is so dang good! I hope your vinegar is good too!

My friend just gave me some homemade red wine vinegar. He’s in the wine business, so he just adds his leftover wine to his vinegar starter. Makes for some fantastic stuff.

I’ve never tried, but honestly, I haven’t really used it much so I doubt I’d know the difference in flavor even though I suspect that difference is HUGE.
