Garden Update

Well because of rain early in the Spring we didn’t get the ground ready for our garden. Time went by and we were really busy and didn’t get our plants out so we debated on if we wanted to have a garden this year. Gardening is just in my husbands blood though so even though we were about six weeks behind most everyone else we planted anyway.

We are excited to see tomatoes on our plants. As you can see in the picture we had to buy a tripod sprinkler to water our garden. It has been really hot here with pretty much no rain for weeks.

                                 We also have peppers!!

My sweet husband planted me a really large herb garden this year. I have Rosemary, Thyme, Lemon Thyme, Basil. Parsley, Oregano, Sweet Mint, Peppermint, Chives, Apple Sage, Tarragon, Marjoram, and Garlic. I wanted enough Basil so that I could make lots of Pesto to put up for the Winter so he planted 14 Basil plants.I think I am going to be in the pesto making business!!

This is the first year that we have tried Spicy Basil as well. It is really good and I look forward to mixing it with the Sweet Basil.

I know most people have already harvested a lot of veggies but we are still happy that we decided to have a garden this year even though our harvest will be a little later than most.Have you already been getting a harvest from your garden?

I really like the basil “hedge”. Fourteen plants? Oh yea…..that’s pesto HEAVEN!
    :)

  • Jordan@the2seasons

Wow you will be making tons of pesto but since pesto is so tasty I am sure you won’t mind. We just got our first squash and we felt so proud something from our garden. I just planted rosemary since you mentioned drying some so hopefully that will take off in our garden.

your garden looks amazing. The only hope we have in our climate of growing peppers and tomatoes is inside a greenhouse; it’s just too windy and cold. Your plot looks so well cared for and prolific; mine is full of weeds I’m ashamed to say – we’ve had warm wet weather for about 3 months now

oh I am jealous right now of your peppers! I want some so bad so I can make big batches of marinated peppers for the fall! your garden looks awesome

My husband was telling me about an article he read which suggested that the little “suckers” on tomato plants could be rooted and planted … and would supply late-season tomatoes. So, even though your plants went in a bit later than you’d have liked, I’m guessing that, especially with the warm weather you’ve been having, you’ll have fresh tomatoes up to Thanksgiving. Wouldn’t that be lovely! I adore your herb garden. It’ll be a lot of fun to try out the different flavors. We always grow sweet basil, parsley and mint but this year I added pots of lemon basil and oregano. I’ve always loved oregano but haven’t ever had lemon basil and it’s so good! We love light lunches of Bruschetta-style sandwiches … I toast some homemade bread, layer on fresh tomatoes, onions & green peppers … top with herbs, salt & pepper & little drizzle of olive oil. They are so good! It turns out that my favorite herb to top with is the lemon basil. Thanks for sharing your lovely garden with us … I’m totally envious of the huge space you have for veggies! :-)

Wow, I thought I had a lot of basil, but with 14 plants, you’ve got me beat! :D

Fabulous gardens! That’s a lot of basil. So nice with the fresh tomatoes. I’ve never had spicy Basil, I’m sure I’d love it. I’ll have to look for it.

  • My Little Home and Garden

I don’t have much in the way of edibles, but other than some herbs it’s been too early to harvest anything. Tomatoes in August, I hope!

  • SizzleandZoom

Wish I had room for veggies. I would have to plant herbs in a planter and then I wouldn’t have enough sun area.
I’m all planted out.You have a wonderful garden.

You’re going to be so happy that you went ahead and planted a garden (in spite of it being a bit late) when you start harvesting & enjoying your fresh veggies & herbs :-) I can’t plant a veggies garden because it would become a buffet for the dogs – assuming they don’t trample all the plants first! I’m planning to go to the farmer’s market as often as I can during the summer so I can buy locally grown produce – the next best thing to growing it yourself :-)

I am NUTS about basil and clearly you are too. Sixteen plants would make me quite happy! :) But now I’m curious about spicy basil too. I love your garden!

BASIL! Your husband deserves as much pesto as he can eat.
(Ever tried Thai basil? does well in – surprise – Thai coconut soup. Very lemony Zing).

Do ya’ll sell oils for the home? Like to make things smell better…or peppermint oil for the face?

    • http://ecofriendlyhomemaking.com Alicia

We haven’t gotten in to scents for the home yet. We have a wonderful peppermint body balm that a lot of massage therapist use.

  • Jody Brettkelly

The spicy basil sounds intriguing! Does it smell any differently?

  • http://cherylbarker.blogspot.com/ Cheryl Barker

So neat that your husband loves to garden. The herb garden sounds wonderful. Enjoy!

All of those herbs! I’m so jealous. What a beautiful garden.
