Do You Know What This Is?

I was walking out in the yard this afternoon and noticed this flower growing in the wooded area of our yard. I don’t know what it is.

This is what it looks like before it opens up. If you know the name of this flower  please let me know.

When I married my husband many years ago I really didn’t know much about plants and flowers. My mother-in-law is the most flower knowledgeable person I know. and I have always been amazed at what an awesome green thumb she has.I have learned so very much from her. Every Spring she gets excited to go to places like Lowes and the Farmers Markets to  pick out plants for the season. For the past ten years or so she fills her deck with all kinds of wonderful plants and she will sit out there and enjoy them so much. At the end of the Summer she blesses any of us in the family with the plants we would like to have. This is always so much fun. I have some lovely orchids, some palms and one of my favorite plants an awesome Ming Arelia. She will be 83 this year and at the first of Spring she was already getting excited to go ” plant shopping ” She loves getting her hands in the dirt.

She really does have such a green thumb!

Here she is having a good laugh with our son. These pictures were all taken this past year. I will have to do a post on what has been going on with her now. She is such a giver and I was thinking about how important it is to sow good seeds so that we reap  good crops. We can sow seeds of kind words or good deeds or even a smile. I have seen people sow seeds out of anger, retaliation and being hurt and I see the kind of crops it produces, We should all want to harvest good crops and it all depends on the seeds we start with!

I hope someone recognizes the flower at the top of the page and can tell me what it is. Do you have a green thumb and grow any unusual flowers?

Alicia, sorry — no help naming the flower. I think I like it best before it opens, though.

Thanks so much for letting me know on my bog post that it really hit the spot for you this evening. What a blessing to hear!

Alicia- Is your flower in the allium or onion family, maybe? I bet it has a little bulb. It’s sweet!

So excited to see your sunblock shown!

I can’t help you. I need a guide book to figure out plants, flowers and birds. But the little round balls
    are adorable.

  • Sue

I have to agree with the others-I thought it looked to be some sort of Allium-perhaps a chive ?

No clue on the flower but it’s a lovely post about your wonderful mother-in-law. It’s winter here and no garden planting going on, sadly.

  • Anne

I’m sure it’s an allium – ornamental onion. They get more beautiful as they open wider :)

  • Jordan@the2seasons

Sorry I can’t help I do not have a clue what the flower is you have pictured. We are slowly learning about plants and flowers here. Mr. Spring is really getting into learning all about plants. We have been going crazy buying different types to see what what takes and what is our style. It is kinda exciting we go out and observe everyday!

I have no clue. It is a beauty though. :)

I was going to say it looks like an onion…but I see some have said that already! Your mother in law looks sweet…like mine! And the sun block looks like another great product!

Hello Alicia and thanks for stopping by! I’m so happy to find your blog and was excited to see your wild onion. That’s a native I’d love to encourage in my own garden. Enjoy the weekend!

That is so similar to a purple plant we have in our garden (I’ll ask my mother who also know loads about plants)

Most days, I have a black thumb! So, I can’t help you, unfortunately. But luckily, I can grow herbs and some tomato plants. Knock on wood! ;)

  • Thistlewoodfarms

I do love to work in the yard. I am not an expert, though….so I can’t really help you with your plant :) It looks beautiful!

I’m not sure what that is either, but it’s so pretty! A puffball of beauty.

Wish I could name that plant. Unfortunately, I’ve never had a knack for gardening. Your mother in law reminds me of my mom. She loves to go to the garden store here. That is one gift I always knew she would love. She is 79 now and has lower back problems, so she cant really work with her plants anymore. Your mother in law looks like a wonderful lady!

My thumb is far far from green. Luckily, my husband is more ambitious than I am and our garden thrives under his rule. I water and harvest in the mornings, but that’s the extent of my gardening talents. The flower is very cool looking. I hope you can figure it out!

I don’t think I’ve seen that plant before. My grandma has a green thumb and is a giver too. ~Nicole @Helpmamaremote
