Tips From Some Pros

When we lived in California my job had me in contact with a lot of executives  of companies and some of them were well known beauty companies such as Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder, Aveda and many others.I am a real question person and loved getting beauty information from these women. One thing that I learned is that no matter what age you are you should never color your hair darker than your natural color because it will look harsh and not very flattering. This is even more true the older you get. As you age you should even use a shade lighter than your natural color. While we lived in California I was able to have my hair colored with an awesome natural hair color out of Napa. I don’t like using chemicals on my hair and Henna hasn’t worked that well for me so I am just letting the gray show now!!

Another tip for women 30 and older is not to use dark or bright red lipstick. It will accentuate lines around the mouth and be very unflattering. You should go with soft  colors that brighten your face. Eye shadows that are soft and muted will bring out the color of your eyes better than bright loud colors.

Your foundation should match your skin tone and not be to dark because it will look unnatural and your blush should just give your face a nice hint of color. So many women tend to have a heavy hand in the foundation and blush department they said. One thing that I would add to this is please be a label reader when you are buying cosmetics. There are so many awful chemicals that are allowed to be put in them. Know your ingredients and what they are made from because we absorb what we put on our skin. Do you already use any of these tips and do you have any other ones that you could share with us?

We saw some of the first Iris of the season the other day. I think that the purple ones are some of my favorites!

If you get a chance check out our new mineral make-up at Eco Natural Soap . We have 10 shades of foundation. It has been a big hit locally and now we have it available on line.

I decided to go grey gracefully. I’ve watched my mother (now 71) get herself ‘stuck’ because she started to use dyes to cover the grey and now, she’s having to keep it up (SO time consuming, SO much money, SO many harsh chemicals) because I think she’d be shocked if she knew what her natural colour was now. I rather like my silver hairs; I feel I’ve earned them through life :)

Good makeup tips. I endorse each one. :D and aren’t irises just fabulous? They’re my favorites, I think.

I’ve never been a big fan of a red lip – despite the fact that I am in my twenties. I far more prefer dark, smoldering eyes and nude lips – it’s such a gorgeous look! :)

Great tips! I was never a fan of red lipstick for myself. I prefer more natural colors when I wear makeup. Your iris is such a gorgeous color. I am patiently waiting for mine to bloom, but I have plenty of time.

oh i wish i had tips of my own but I can tell you a handful of those i grew up hearing from my southern grandmother! The queen belle herself. Such as ALWAYS suck your stomach in and put some color on- meaning stand up straight and always make sure to at least have something on your lips!:)

The purple flowers are gorgeous. Heck, that shade would make a lovely eye shadow, too. ;)

I really don’t wear much (any) make-up other than eye liner but it was definitely interesting to hear about the hair coloring! I’ve always gone lighter than my natural color on the rare occasions that I’ve dyed it, but I never realized that was a “rule”! :P

I got gray at an early age (white streaks, like Morticia’s in The Adams Family, run in my family). As a young person, I hated it and spent a lot of time & money coloring my hair. These days I’m “au natural” … and I’m okay with it! Sometimes it’s just a matter of accepting ourselves. That being said, I’ve also learned that keeping my hair healthy makes it shiny and lovely!

What great tips. I have black (ish) hair and only a few gray ones and I’m very old. Must be good genes. I stopped coloring my hair 5 years ago thinking it was time to go gray like my friends. Surprise.. there weren’t any. I like the idea of going lighter. I might give it a go again. Might make me feel young again.

I have always used Lancome. Any problems with that one?

When I lived in Tennessee I had a friend who would never leave the house without her hair and makeup done. Not even to the edge of the lawn to get the mail. “You never know who you’ll see and it only takes 10 minutes to look fantastic.” I’ve never forgotten her advice. I don’t always follow it. :)

My Mom used to always wear dark red lipstic, of course she had a darker complection than I do. Red lipstick would make me look like all lips.

If you want to stop by, I have a Garden Club linky up to link our flowers, plants etc. Anything that grows. I will be doing this every Thursday but started early this week so I could figure out the linky

I think you had a post up last week that you could link to it if you want. Have a great day!!

I’m loving all the spring flowers – I don’t think I can handle any more snow here! I think these tips are great – I don’t have any to add! Thank you for sharing!

I think mascara makes a huge difference. I love that simple look and it is so fast and easy.

Yes I learned that about the red lipstick at my Mad Men party – its just too harsh, a light pink is so much better – great advice!

Oh dear… I’ve been dyeing my hair a slightly darker shade of reddish-brown intermittently for years now. :-P

Alicia- perfect timing! I was going to go to the mall and buy some mineral foundation – now I will have to try yours. How do I choose my skin tone?

Love the new look on the blog!

Congratulations on the success of your new mineral make-up line! It’s definitely scary some of the ingredients they put in make-up. Even some brands that claim to be natural contain dangerous ingredients!

Thanks for the tips. So glad you mentioned that older women shouldn’t go darker than their natural color. I’m getting weary of looking at pretty women who’ve transformed themselves into Morticia Adams with their black hair. It’s terribly aging.!
