Do You Know Your Carbon Footprint?

I am a regular reader of Alicia Silverstone’s blog The Kind Life. It has a lot of great information on being Eco Friendly. She had a link to a site that helps you calculate your carbon footprint. I think you will find it interesting to see what yours is.
Two other great blogs to check out if you are looking for ways to reduce your footprint is  Little Green Blog and Reduce Footprints. There is an awesome weekly challenge on Wednesday’s that I try to always participate in. Not only is it fun but you will learn a lot!

As you can see we live sort of out in the country so I always try to make my trips count when driving into to town. We have over 80 retail locations that sell our products so I am on the road a lot. What I do is whatever area I am in I do my shopping while I am there. That saves on gas and time and helps me reduce our footprint in that area. Here are some other very useful simple tips to help you reduce your footprint.

Avoid using your dryer and air dry your clothes if possible. This is a good time to put this into practice sine warmer weather will soon be here.

Wash your clothes in cold water because using warm or hot water uses so much more energy.

Replace light bulbs with Compact Florescent or LED bulbs

Turn off lights when you’re not in a room

Regulate the temperature in your house. Even 2 degrees can make a huge difference.

Clean and replace your air filters on a regular basis so they will work more efficiently

Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth. This will save around 25 gallons of water a month!!

Unplug and turn off all electronics when you are not using them..

These are all really simple and pretty easy to do. Do you already do any of these things and do you have any other good “reduce your carbon footprint” tips that you can share?

Oh how I love Spring flowers! I am always so excited to see these beauties!

Oh I am so glad to see you again! If you read down a few posts you will see that all of my blog posts and comments from the past two years are gone. My blog was one of over six thousand that was hit. After clearing everything off Google searched my blog and said that it was all clean. We did some changes so that should never happen again.

I am fortunate enough that our city has curbside recycling. It’s amazing how much you can keep out of your trash can and out of the landfills. We actually called to get the larger size recycling can. If everyone did their part imagine the possibilities.

I am kinda nervous to figure out what my footprint is. We do only have one car and when the weather is nice I try to bike to the grocery store and out to dinner. I think that is a good start. The flowers are so pretty!

I think I’m about 1/3 energy aware. Part of what I do is born of OCD, I suspect…like turning off the water and turning off lights. Leaving them on just makes me crazy. lol

It was hard for me to calculate my footprint because I don’t pay for my electricity or heat or anything like that so I have no idea how much I use (it’s included in my rent) but I typically walk EVERYWHERE and when I’m not walking, I take public transportation. I also don’t eat meat and never turn on my A/C! It’s definitely important to always be thinking about how to reduce it, though!

Great tips that we all can use a reminder about. ;)

  • Janette@The2Seasons

I have always done most of these things. I was raised in a home where we didn’t waste things – even electricity. I automatically turn off the lights, the water, etc.

I like to use cloth napkins, rather than paper. Though they may take a little water for washing, I still think it’s better than using paper, and it feels more special.

We use most of these ideas and more, thanks for the reminder. The only one we have trouble with is to clean and replace your air filters on a regular basis so they will work more efficiently as we cannot fit a filter in where it belongs and have to do without.
